Today I read a story about design saving lives.
In 1988, Simon Bailey went to Zambia in Africa to provide humanitarian assistance. He discovered one thing, many children in remote places, because of lack of basic medicine, often diarrhea caused dehydration and lost their lives. But Coca-Cola is available almost everywhere. He thought at that time, if medicines could be packed in Coca-Cola’s shipping box, wouldn’t it be anywhere, as long as there was Cola, there would be medicine? Later, the BBC invited him to participate in the radio program, and finally knocked on the door of Coca-Cola. Coca-Cola expressed interest in Berry’s plan.
Berry and his wife immediately quit their jobs and studied a large number of industrial design books. They believed that Coca-Cola’s existing operation mode could not be changed, but that the UK used the excess space already in the box. POTS was born, and the staff only needed to pack the one-by-one combination bags into the gap, and the first aid kit could be shipped with Cola to every needed corner.
Such an creative idea not only saves lives, but also greatly enhances the image of Coca-Cola, and hardly adds any planning to you. It also solves the problem that charitable organizations such as UNICEF have medicines but cannot deliver them to those in need.
After reading this story, I remembered a sentence said by my university teacher: “An ant can cross the river by borrowing a buffalo’s back.”
